Bridges grows increasingly hammy as B.B., while Kunis makes for a rather bland Mona Sax. The rest of the cast doesn't fare much better. He isn't given much to do except to try and channel Steve McQueen by grunting, grimacing and occasionally - occasionally - kicking someone's ass. It also doesn't help that Wahlberg gives a drab performance, but that's more the story's fault than his.

We've seen the mourning cop character dozens of times now, and while that concept may be true to Max's videogame roots this film does nothing to make him seem like anything other than a tired genre clichГ©. You simply never give a damn about anything that happens in the movie, whether it's caring about if Max learns who killed his wife or watching his violent retribution play out. Max Payne boasts an arresting visual style reminiscent of Constantine, but it's merely a smokescreen vainly designed to hide the skimpy story, flat pacing, uninspired action scenes and stale characters. (Beau Bridges), who might be the only person left that Max can trust. (Oh, did I forget to mention that there are horrific winged wraiths peppered throughout the film?) As Max's quest for bloody vengeance proceeds, he is shadowed by dogged Internal Affairs detective Jim Bravura (Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges) and his late dad's ex-cop partner B.B. His investigation leads him to a crooked corporation, a failed military science program, and a lethal street drug. The deeper Max digs the more surreal things seem to become. With the vengeful Mona's help, Max discovers a conspiracy behind his wife's death.

A series of unique tattoos on the victims and suspects leads Max to a group of shady characters including the stone cold but sexy Mona Sax (Mila Kunis). Now assigned to working in the cold case squad as a glorified file clerk, Max comes across a new lead in his wife's death when he's pulled into the investigation of another beautiful woman's grisly murder. A brooding widower whose pregnant wife and unborn child were murdered some years before, Max is a grim reaper-like figure in the department: a storied tough guy who may or may not have killed suspects in his wife's case who subsequently mysteriously disappeared. Based on the Rockstar videogame franchise, Max Payne follows the eponymous maverick cop (Mark Wahlberg), who is a NYPD detective here rather than an undercover DEA agent.
